Course Description
“The Fundamentals of Knitwear” provides a visual and practical introduction to the subject of knitwear, allowing students to gain a foundational understanding of the technical as well as creative aspects of knitwear design. We will discuss how the research and design process builds upon and differs from woven clothing design, ways of gathering inspiration, and concept development. The course will also provide a survey of knit technical structure, including hand knitting, machine knitting, and the differences between cut-and-sew vs. fully fashioned knits. Throughout the course, we will examine practical applications of all the ideas and techniques discussed, fueling inspiration and innovation in looking towards the future.
